JOB DESCRIPTION
 
Pediatric occupational therapists are qualified occupational therapists who work with children and infants with problems in cognitive functions, movement and coordination. These young patients could be suffering from a wide range of conditions such as neurological complaints, orthopedic injuries, spinal cord damage, muscular dystrophy, sensory integration difficulties, Autism spectrum disorders, or other disorders.
The work of a pediatric occupational therapist involves analyzing and treating skeletal, neuromuscular or cognitive restrictions of their young patients. It also includes helping them in developing their interaction and communication skills, refinement of motor skills and educating them in self-care abilities, especially for the older children.
As the Pediatric occupational therapist is dealing with children, patience and persistence are important traits. Most of the patients are too young to understand verbal instructions, so games are often incorporated in the therapy. This will help to engage their interest and cooperation. It is imperative to have the commitment and support of the family as well.
 
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
? Seeks and obtains sufficient information necessary to function effectively in the home care setting where assigned
? Provides individual patient/client services and determines priority needs for occupational therapy by assessing and evaluating therapeutic, rehabilitative and functional status.
? Assessing for muscle strength, mobility, sensory integration, ROM, potential for rehabilitation and evaluation of the home environment.
? Participating in the development of the total plan of care.
? Directing the occupational therapy treatment plan of care.
? Regularly re-evaluating patient/client progress and revising the plan of care as necessary.
? Initiates the occupational therapy program and instructs other personnel and/or family/caregivers in certain phases of occupational therapy in which they may work with a patient /client, as well as instructing them as to the goals of the program for the patient/client.
? Instructs patients/clients and family/caregivers in the use and care of therapeutic appliances and/or prosthetic devices when applicable.
? Maintains communication regarding patient / client status with the physician and supervisory personnel.
? Collaborates with the physician and other team members to develop, implement and support the patient?s Plan of Care
? Completes, maintains and submits accurate and relevant clinical notes regarding patient evaluation and attainment of goals.
? Observes the patient/client for reactions to treatment or changes in condition and discusses changes with the patient/family/caregiver and reports changes as necessary.
? Assists the caregivers/families, other healthcare personnel in providing continuity of care.
? Clinical documentation must be completed in a clear, concise and timely manner.
? Participation in Agency?s other mandated activities as requested by Agency Director such as In-services and patient care conferences.
? Able to interact positively with patients and families.
? Willingness to participate in education and committee work related to patient care.
QUALIFICATIONS
? Is a graduate of an accredited masters or doctorate program in Occupational Therapy, or has met all the requirements for license.
? Has at least two years of appropriate experience as an Occupational Therapist. Home health experience preferred.
? Is currently licensed as a occupational therapist through the Appropriate State Board of Occupational Therapy.
? Complies with accepted professional standards of practice.
? Displays good observation skills and judgment as well as good oral and written communication skills.
? Is self-directed and able to work with little supervision.
? Flexible yet organized with the ability to exercise independent and sound judgment.
? Current/valid state driver?s license, vehicle in good working order and insured.
